To My Conservative Friends on the Issue of Immigration, Part 3
My conservative friends, it might be prudent to take a closer look at both past and present proponents of quotas for immigrants. Historically and at present these are the same people who are heirs to an ideology that promotes racism, eugenics, and a collectivist framework.
It is true that even in colonial times some were cruel and unwelcoming to newcomers. The Catholics (derided as papists) and the Jewish (called Jesus killers) were disliked and ostracized. Then, each in their own time, Asians, Irish, Italians, Polish, Slavs, and others faced prejudice. But with the establishment and growth of administrative agencies, rules and regulations became official fiats against immigrants.
The worst hostility, at present, is directed largely at one group: Latinos. For over a century Latinos have crossed back and forth peacefully, to work, visit and live among us with good relations. That is, until recently. I am asking my conservative friends to carefully analyze and view suspiciously this recent prejudice and ask, why now? Ask yourself, what reason could there be for the increasing slurs against these particular people? Examine carefully those groups whose purpose this hostility serves.
Contrary to statistics by very questionable, falsely prestigious economic research groups, immigrants do not use a disproportionate share of welfare. Welfare for anyone, rich or poor, citizen or non-citizen, is a concept that is immoral. In the past few years, however, one would think the only people receiving welfare are illegal aliens, usually equated with Latinos.
Numerous legitimate studies exist that examine the record and show these so-called statistics are a fabrication. In several cases legitimate statistical studies are used, but the conclusions are misquoted. Unfortunately, they have been repeated over and over until people now believe Latinos are using more welfare than they actually are.
I believe the conservatives I know would be horrified to learn the unsavory source and the real agenda of these pseudo research groups who barely hide their animosity to all immigrants, or at least those not of Western European heritage. These false statistics and statements are identical to those accusations and statistics used by the most collectivist and non-individualist groups. One might very easily conclude that conservatives are being used and manipulated to create hatred and animosity toward Latinos and actually all racial and ethnic groups that are not "Aryan." It is up to you to research and reach your own conclusions.
To fail to take the moral and ethical action, the action that is in keeping with our founding precepts, is a betrayal of our principles. Further, to claim we support a free market as essential to a free and self-regulating people and then advocate for the very opposite and support authoritarianism when it comes to immigration, is destructive to the market process and to our own welfare.
My conservative friends, please look carefully at the barrage of anti-immigration hostility so recently in vogue. Neither conservatives, libertarians nor any proponents of a free market process can be logically consistent and support collectivism, racism, or the insidious power of administrative law. Evaluate, read, and study. I am confident you will see real value found in immigration and a return to the great benefits more open immigration brings to us all.
